I am doing a rhetorical analysis on Stokely Carmichael’s “Black Power” Berkely Speech and I have really enjoyed reading your blog and educating myself on the racial climate at the time of this speech. Because this is a research paper, I am wondering where exactly you get your information you post on your blog- Any book suggestions?
Dear Emily,
I am happy to hear that you enjoyed reading my posts. I actually graduated from university discussing a thesis on Stokely Carmichael and the Rhetoric of Black Power. A major part of the thesis was dedicated to a rhetorical analysis of Carmichael’s speeches. Taking inspiration from Brockriede and Scott’s “The Rhetoric of Black Power” (see my reading list above) I did a profound analysis of the Berkeley Speech on the one hand and of a speech Carmichael held in Detroit on the other hand. Essential information on Carmichael is contained in:
- CARMICHAEL, Stokely, THELWELL, Ekwueme Michael, Ready for Revolution:The Life and Struggles of Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Scribner, New York, 2005.
- SCOTT, Robert L., Brockriede Wayne, The Rhetoric of Black Power, Harper & Row, New York, 1969.
- Gallagher, Victoria J. “Black Power in Berkeley: Postmodern Constructions in the Rhetoric of Stokely Carmichael”, in The Quarterly Journal of Speech, May, 2001.
I am planning to publish parts of my analysis on this blog, but it might take me several weeks.
Keep me updated on your work and analysis.
