“Few people have asked me to make a video on how to draw dynamic poses poses for superheroes and stuff. And there s a lot of other great videos on of people teaching you how to do that but people have been asking so i guess i might as well do one cuz. I ve been wanting to draw a spider man that s far from home stealth suit and if i m gonna draw spider man i might as well talk about drawing dynamic poses because there s not many more dynamic pose bold characters out there than spider man. So let s draw spider man stealth suit and i ll give you some advice on how to draw dynamic poses.
All right right off the top be fast and loose the very first turtle. They aft overcome is obviously figuring out what this pose is that you re drawing and a good way to do that is think about what exactly is happening in the situation. Obviously you ve got an idea for a character that you want to draw what s that character doing right now i mean i m drawing spider man and i m drawing him mid swing because to me that s the most interesting thing to draw spider man doing usually i like to draw him transitioning from one web to the next. He s at the end of one rope and shooting out the next one to do another swing and in this stage.
Like i said be loose. Don t get too bogged down with trying to make the body parts the right size. And all that kind of stuff just really whip. Out the pose.
Just let your brain kind of vomit out the ideas you can work out all. The proportions and all of that later on you re just trying to find your pose right. Now a lot of people use a line of action at this stage. That s not something that i really used while i was learning so i can t talk too much about the benefits of it i think it is super useful for a lot of people.
But i m not the right person to teach you that because i don t really use line of actions that much but another way to start coming up with some good pose ideas is obviously just look at a bunch of artists you really like you can practice their poses by just copying them obviously if you re going to copy someone else s pose exactly you should give them credit. If you re posting it anywhere. But just looking at how they re doing their poses and trying to copy that can be a really good way to start practicing. But another thing to do is actually this is easier for digital artists.
But you can also do it. If you have some tracing paper bring down the opacity of an image of art. That you really like from an artist that you really like some kind of dynamic pose and then draw in a basic body structure over there character. So you just have the very basics like draw.
The arms cylinders and all that kind of stuff like just very basic shapes..
And then with that you can draw your character on top of that to try and figure out how they did their poses. Another piece of advice. Which is actually something that i learned from a video by jim lee. Who s one of the ultimate comic book artists of history is if you want to pose to be really dynamic have the torso and the waist facing in different directions not necessarily opposite directions.
Because that s impossible for a normal person. Although with comic books you can kind of stretch. What a human can actually do obviously cuz a lot of time drag superheroes or people with inhuman abilities and ya have the torso and waist facing in different directions. Because a body twisting is just inherently more dynamic looking than them being static and straight.
And still okay so that s all the advice for this part of trying to find your pose. So here are the roughs that i came up with and i m gonna pick one of these to do the rest of the image with music now into the actual drawing. I ve made my selection and i really like this spider man pose. It s when i drop somewhat frequently.
But it s a good one. I really like drawing this pose and with this rough pose moving into the next part. Where you re getting a little bit. More detailed with the roughs.
You can either take the thumbnail sketch that you ve drawn and scale. It up or you can just draw it from scratch. I tend to flip flop between which one i do for this i just scaled it up and got the drawing. But make sure that you don t stick to strictly to what you draw in the first place because that rough was very loose and fast.
And it s definitely not proportioned properly or it s most likely not i ended up having to move the waist up a little bit closer to the torso for the image to work better. And i had to change the size and positioning of the head a little bit. But all in all i really like this pose and i m glad i m going with it. But now another problem that people have when they re doing dynamic poses is the perspective of the limbs.
And with this piece..
Obviously. There s a lot of that because one hand is thrusting forward shooting. A web. One s going off into the background and it s it s nice and dynamic.
But there s a lot of perspective stuff you got to keep in mind. So part of the solution for this is to you know just get better at anatomy and practice learning. The different muscles and stuff. Because the drawing will obviously work a lot better if you know what the different muscles kind of do and look like.
But that s not the point of this video right now because that takes a lot of grinding and learning. This is more tips and tricks so another two tips that you can use and these two are very similar. They re kind of just different ideas of the same idea and the first one is called the spiral technique. I think it s called the spiral technique.
Where what you do is you draw a spiral getting bigger and bigger. This is for say you ve got an arm. That s coming closer to the audience and then you use that spiral as a guide to draw the arm inside of because that kind of spiral. Getting bigger and bigger gives you an idea of what a cylinder would be doing in perspective.
And that s pretty much what the arm is for the most part in terms of its basic shape. It s like two cylinders attached together another way to do this. Which is how i do things. That s kind of a simplified version of the spiral technique is to just draw a circle for the wrist and a circle for the elbow.
This is something that works well for me. Now because i have a few years of experience drawing limbs in perspective. So it might not work for you if you re a beginner at doing dynamic poses. But there s no downside in trying it out and that kind of leads me into another idea that s something i used to have problems with i used to struggle with getting limbs.
The right length and also drying heads and part of the problem for that was i was starting by drawing either when i was trying to get to the head..
I would draw the neck first from the torso or if i was trying to get to drawing the hand. I would draw the arm. Then the elbow. Then the forearms and the hand a good idea for doing pose work.
Any kind of drawing really with a character is draw. Where the hands going to be like put a block. There something and then draw the arm up to that spot because then you know where the hand is going to be you ve got it probably in a good spot. That s not too close not too far away.
And then you can figure out how the elbow should be bent for the arm to meet the hand at that spot after the fact you don t have to just draw the arm. Hoping you re gonna get the hand. Where you want it to be so to rephrase that draw like the torso the waist. The head the hand and then add things like the neck and arm attaching it all and now that we re getting into the inking and coloring and less working on the pose.
I just want to say that all this stuff that i ve talked about is stuff. That has worked for me. And this is one of the reasons. I have a hard time making videos like how to draw this because there are a bunch of different ways to learn how to draw something and not everything is going to work for you they re going to be specific tools and techniques and tricks and tips that work for you and other ones don t i ve had people teach me something in a youtube video or in a class that they swear up and down works and it just doesn t work for me.
I just can t grasp the concept. So a lot of the stuff in here. I highly recommend taking a crack at it trying it a few times. But if it s not working for you there s a million other youtube videos where people are teaching you how to draw dynamic poses.
Go check out jazz s or anyone else who has one out there because there are a lot of great ones. And you will find something that works for you you just got to keep trying and trying remember that i ve been drawing for about i mean i ve been working really hard at getting better for about five years now. I ve been drawing for like 20 something years. But just trying to get better takes a long time.
And it can be frustrating trying to find what s going to work for you..
But just know that if you keep going you will find something so for now. Just keep drawing poses try out these techniques try out other people s techniques. And you will get there i promise and i mean hopefully. The practicing is fun there are some parts of it that can be boring like grinding through anatomy lessons.
But i mean at the end of the day. You re drawing and you re creating something out of nothing. Which is a really cool feeling regardless of how good the quality of the image is and just know that your images are going to get better and better and better and soon enough your dynamic poses are gonna be even cooler than your favorite comic book artists so long as you keep practicing okay. I just wanted to end with a kind of optimistic rant for this video.
Because it s a learning video. And i want to make sure you know that as long as you keep going you re gonna get better. So. Here is our spider man in his far from home stealth suit music all right everybody.
